Numeric fields can be used in 3 ways when building a table using the Beyond 20/20 Builder.

Using the field as a weight field (When Your Source File Has Only 1 Numeric Field)

When your source file has only 1 numeric field containing values that you want to appear in the cells of your final table, use Define Weight Field to set this source field as your weight:

To set a weight field:

  1. From the Data menu, choose Set Weight field. The Set Weight Field dialog box appears. Only numeric fields from the source file are shown.
  2. Select the checkbox for Use weight field.
  3. Select the field that you want to use as the weight field and click OK.

The source field selected to weight the data appears dimmed in the source field bar and will not be available for use as a dimension.

Defining a Series (When Your Source File Has Multiple Numeric Fields)

When your source file has more than 1 numeric field containing values that you want to appear in the cells of your final table, use Define Series to group them under 1 name which will become your dimension name.
Note: You can only include 1 series of numeric fields in a table

To define a series using the Define Series dialog box

This method creates a series, with a name of your choosing, whose constituent values are arrived at by summing the values of the members of their respective source fields.

Note: Series must be defined before the table is built.

  1. From the Source menu, choose Define Series. The Define Series dialog box appears.
  2. In Series Name, enter a unique name for the series. The name you enter will become the name of the dimension tile that represents the series.
  3. In Source Fields, select a source field to include in the series. If you want to change the name of the item in the series, enter the new name in Item Name.
  4. Click Add field.

If the field you selected is not a numeric or boolean field, the Source Field Type dialog box prompts you to redefine the source field. Click Numeric if the data contains numeric values that calculations can be performed upon. Click Boolean if the data has only two possible values, such as True and False or Yes and No.

  5. Repeat from Step 3 for each source field that you want to include in the series.
  6. Click OK. A new tile with the name you gave to your series appears in the source field bar. The series is associated with the source fields you added to it.
  7. If you wish to keep a copy of the source definition file for future use or modification, save the file by selecting Save As from the File menu. For more information about saving source definition files.

Note: When you position a series dimension in a table, all the tiles associated with the series are dimmed in the source field bar.

To define a series using the Units area

To define a series when building a table from a source file:

  • Drag any number of numeric source tiles into the Units area. A new tile with the name Units appears in the source field bar, and the Units series is automatically added to the dimension bar of your table layout. The tiles that represent Units and its members are dimmed in the source field bar.

The value of each of the items that make up the series Units is arrived at by summing the values of the members of the numeric source field the item is based on.
