When building tables usually dimensions consist of a set of standard codes with associated labels. These codes are usually short and do not exceed the Beyond 20/20 System limit of 16 characters:
From System Limits Document Installed with Publisher's Edition
Items
Element | Maximum | Notes |
---|---|---|
Item name | 16 characters | - |
Item label | 254 characters | - |
Item notes | 64,000 characters | Notes that have more than 32,000 characters may cause problems with Beyond 20/20 products prior to version 6.0. |
Sometimes the source fields or columns used when building tables do not have standard codes that are 16 characters or less. For this scenario you can easily generate a dimension definition file, IVD, containing the codes and labels and have the label automatically set to the default label.
To automatically generate a set of codes for a source field:
Double-click the source field for which you want to generate codes.
e.g. In this screen capture, if you double click Nom Compte,
You will be asked if you want to generate an IVD file that will contain the codes and labels:
Click OK. The dimension definition file is created (be default it will be called <First 4 letters of the Source File name><First 4 letters of the Source Field name>.IVD, e.g. dbo_Nom.ivd and the dimension view of the source field appears:
Now if you drag the source field into your table you will see the labels:
When you quit the builder or build the table, you will be prompted to save an update definition file, IVU:
If you click Yes then you will also be prompted to save a source definition file, IVS:
When you click okay, the association between your source field and the dimension definition file containing the labels will be saved.
Notes:
- The dimension definition file created here can be used when building other tables with the same dimension.
- If you open a .CSV many times, do not load a source definition file each time (see https://beyond2020.freshdesk.com/a/solutions/articles/44002126470), and double click on the same source field, a new dimension definition file will be created each time.
